Pastor Alvin Andrew Craig, Sr., 90, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, March 7, 2018.
He was the 10th child out of 11 siblings born to Major and Dovie Craig in Catawba County, N.C. on January 25, 1928.
Alvin came to Hagerstown at age 19 to become the youth leader at the Church of God Universal. He worked in many positions in the church's press room that published The Way of Truth paper.
Alvin became the pastor of the church in 1979. He remained the church's pastor until his death, a period of 39 years.
Pastor Craig, his brother Ollen Craig and numerous other pastors traveled extensively overseas doing missionary work, including the Philippines, Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Kenya, Honduras and Nigeria.
Alvin served as a tour guide on 11 trips that visited the Holy Land.
Through the years, Alvin was the editor of the Way of Truth paper and preached sermons on radio stations both in the United States and foreign countries.
He held revivals for many years for congregations all over the world.
Pastor Craig and his first wife, Wanda, visited all 50 states.
Alvin is survived by his wife Susan Craig; daughters Georgeanne Madison, Sharon Snyder, Janet Rudisill, Joyce Ebersole and Marsha Taylor; eight grandchildren, Brian, Crystal, Wanda Kaye, Ken, Sheila, Lorne, Melissa, and Craig; and eight great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Wanda Craig; son Andy Craig, Jr.; and grandsons, Ron Smith, Jr., and Andy Craig III.
Funeral services will be Sunday morning, March 11 at 10 a.m. at the Church of God Universal, 12819 Point Salem Rd. Hagerstown, with Pastor Greg Tyler, Youth Pastor Doug Shenberger, and Pastor Harley McClung officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm on Saturday, March 10, at Rest Haven Funeral Home Inc., 1601 Pennsylvania Ave, Hagerstown MD. Burial will be Monday, March 12 at 2 p.m. at Rest Haven Cemetery.
