Arthur Umali Porciuncula, 71, of Hagerstown, Md., peacefully succumbed to the cancer from which he so valiantly fought, Saturday, July 28, 2018, surrounded by his loving family.
Born April 25, 1947 in Manila, Philippines, he was the son Dionisio and Rosario Umali Porciuncula, and son-in-law of Jack and Kathryn Costa, who preceded him in death.
He graduated from the University of Santo Tomas with a bachelors degree in Fine Arts, and in 1970 moved to the United States.
He was employed as a graphic artist for almost 40 years, working at various companies including Cartography Incorporated; GS Images; eventually retiring, from the Graphic Arts Division, at the Maryland Correctional Training Center in 2013. "Arthur, the good; we shall not meet his likes again," quoted long time friend, Patricia Cushwa, Vice President of the United States Parole Commission.
Arthur proudly volunteered for Hospice of Washington County and enjoyed his time as a Master Gardener with the Western Maryland Hospital Association. "Arthur is so special and truly a one of a kind person, " said Brooke Mullenix, Volunteer Coordinator of Hospice. He lived a rich and rewarding life, filed with untold memorable moments with his close knit and loving family. Arthur's other passions included gourmet cooking for all who knew him, visiting his grandchildren and traveling the world with his soul mate.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Dorrie Costa; beloved daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren. Sara and Frank Kirby, Ethan and Emily, of Manhattan, Kansas; seven sisters, Araceli [Esmilla], Teresita [Pacheco], Carmina [Catapang], Charito [Abella] and Elenita [Evaristo], of the Philippines, Dr. Fe Porciuncula of Hagerstown, Dr. Corazon Arellano of Bluffton, S.C., and repective brothers-in-law; one brother, Dionisio, Jr. and wife Teresita, of Hagerstown; sisters-in-law, Jackie Freeland and Jamie Costa; countless nieces and nephews, whom he adored, and sweet Zashi. Arthur is also survived by in-laws, Chris Costa and Katy Sweeney.
A brief service will be held at 2 o'clock p.m. on Sunday, August 12, at Rest Haven Funeral Home, Inc. Hagerstown, MD, followed by a celebration of Arthur's life.
