Arthur Spiros Rozes of Hagerstown, Maryland passed away on January 8, 2022, at age 80.
Arthur was born on February 22, 1941 in the mountain village of Alestena, Greece and emigrated with his family to America when he was 8 years old. Growing up in Newport, Rhode Island, he attended Rogers High School, graduating in 1959, and was a member of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church. He attended Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts, graduating in 1963 with a major in English and as a member of the Zeta Psi fraternity. Arthur earned his Juris Doctor degree from Boston College Law School in 1966 and continued his legal studies at New York University School of Law Graduate Taxation Program.
He moved to Hagerstown, Maryland in 1967 and began his legal career at Colton, Broadwater, and Boublitz. In 1970, he joined his father-in-law, Charles McKee, with the family business, R.D. McKee, Inc. on West Antietam Street, where he became president of the company in 1976. He expanded the company over the years, acquiring other businesses in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. He returned to practicing law full-time with the Maryland State’s Attorney’s office in the late 1990’s when the businesses were closed or sold. Arthur had been with the State’s Attorney’s office for nearly 50 years at the time of his passing.
He was active in the Hagerstown business community throughout his career, serving on the Board of Directors of Hagerstown Trust Company (later Mid-Atlantic Bank Corporation), including a term as Chairman, and on the Board of Directors of Washington County Hospital Association.
Arthur enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing on the Chesapeake and Narragansett bays, and watching and playing golf. He was a great cook, following Greek family traditions, making terrific meals from simple ingredients. Arthur was a classic movie buff, loved to tell a good joke, and had a sense of humor that was always fun to be around.
He is survived by his children, sons Charles, Jonathan, and Zachary, and daughter Jennifer, by his grandchildren, Aidan, Jason, Benjamin, and Georgia, his former spouse, Jane, and his nephews Jason and Philip and nieces Christina and Emily. He was preceded in death by his parents, Spiros and Mary Rozes, his brother, James, and his partner, Kathryn.
