Betty (Howell) Mowen
Betty (Howell) Mowen, 83, of Smithsburg, passed away on Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at Meritus Medical Center.
Born October 5, 1929 in Roanoke, VA, she was the daughter of the late Elmo Whitfield and Antholene (Plybon) Howell.
Betty was a graduate of the John D. Basset High School in Basset, VA, where she was voted the most popular girl in school and was a cheerleader. Betty went on to graduate from the Jefferson School of Nursing in Roanoke, VA. Betty completed her internship at Chestnut Lodge Hospital in Rockville, MD. She started out as a public health nurse in Virginia and then in Maryland. She continued to work as a registered nurse in the Montgomery County Health Dept. She was voted nurse of the year by Schering Pharmaceuticals. Betty then became a school nurse for the Montgomery County Public School System. She then went to work as an industrial nurse for Fairchild-Hiller before going to work as a registered nurse for IBM. In 1969 Communication Satellite Corporation opened in Clarksburg, MD, where they hired Betty on the spot. She was responsible for training the very first aid response team. She retired in October, 1980.
She was a former member of Blackberry Baptist Church in Sanville, VA and was a member of the American Nurses Association. Betty was a participant and supporter for breast cancer survivors. She loved to sew, crochet, quilt, play the piano, and most importantly, spending time with her family. She was a friend to everyone she met.
She is survived by her husband, Robert W. Mowen; two sons, William T. Magers and wife Connie R. Magers of Clarksburg, David R. Mowen and wife Erica L. Mowen of New Bern, NC; a sister, Ruth A. Prillaman of Smith Mountain Lake, VA.; a brother, Ralph Elmo Howell, of Stuart, VA; four grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a lifelong friend, Elsie McGrady of Boonsboro.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Stamper.
Funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
