Betty Jane Burger

Betty Jane (Burkett) Burger, 87, of Hagerstown, went to be with The Lord on Wednesday, October 31, 2018 at Meritus Medical Center.

Born at home on September 27, 1931, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late John William and Alice Bertha (Daley) Burkett.

Betty was a 1950 graduate of Hagerstown High School. After high school, Betty went to work at Eyerly's Dept. Store downtown Hagerstown, where she was a buyer for children's clothing, traveling many times to New York.

She then went to work for the Western Maryland Railroad and Chessie System as their first code clerk, where she retired in 1973.

She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Hagerstown; and a social member of the VFW, ELK's, F.O.E., and Moose Clubs.

Betty was an avid Orioles fan. She had a passion for plants and flowers and watching them grow. She loved all animals; especially her dog, Sam. Betty enjoyed feeding her furry friends, the birds, squirrels, and rabbits, in her back yard. She will be remembered as a loving and caring person to all who knew her!

She is survived by two brothers, Nelson H. Burkett (Amy Snyder) of Hagerstown, Harold E. Wise (Lisa Wise) of Everette, PA.; two step-sons, Gary W. Burger, Sr. of Chambersburg, Rodney L. Burger of Baltimore; six nieces, Deborah Everhart, Kelli Meyer, Lauri Galbus, Kimberly Abbate, Kristine Hughes, and Bobby Jo Thompson; three nephews, Donald Burkett, Jr., Darren Burkett, Nicoli Wise; and a host of friends.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her loving husband, Donovan Noble Burger; and two brothers, Richard L. Burkett and Donald L. Burkett, Sr.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Monday, November 5, 2018 at Rest Haven Funeral Home, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with Father Todd Young officiating. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2-4pm on Sunday at the funeral home.
