1SG Bruce G. Gettel Senior, USA (Retired)
June 16, 1932 - July 18, 2014

First Sergeant Bruce Gordon Gettel Sr., United States Army (Retired), 26 West Side Avenue, Hagerstown, Maryland, entered into Heaven on Friday 18 July 2014 at 0400 hours.

Born in 1932 in Hagerstown, Maryland, he was the son of the late Harry and Nora Jones Gettel. He was known to most of his family and friends by his nickname "Abe".

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen A. Gettel, in 2007.

In addition to 30 years of military service in the Army National Guard, he worked for Mack Truck and was a member of the United Auto Workers Union for thirty years prior to his retirement.

He was a proud member of Morris Frock American Legion Post 42, and the 29th Infantry Division Association, Lantern Post 729.

From very humble beginnings, Bruce worked very hard to build a life for himself and his family. A loyal husband and devoted father to his four children, he taught us all, by example, the importance and values of work ethic, honesty, and integrity. He was always there to help a friend, neighbor, or family member in whatever way he could.

He was preceded in death by sisters Mary J. Smith, Virginia Fratrick and Ethel Goetz, and brothers Harry Gettel and Floyd Gettel.

Surviving siblings are Betty Canter and John Gettel, both of Hagerstown. He is survived by his children, Judy A. Warrenfeltz and husband MSG Barry E. Warrenfeltz United States Air Force (Ret.), Pamela S. Perrott and husband Dusty, Richard A. Smith and companion Louise Weber, and Bruce Gettel and wife Wendy A. Gettel, all of Hagerstown.

In addition, Abe is survived by grandchildren Julia Smith and Stacy Nibarger of Pennsylvania, Audrey Busta-Peck, of Ohio, Jessica Perrott and Mackenzie Gettel of Hagerstown, Jacob Warrenfeltz of Washington, DC and Brady Gettel of Hagerstown. He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, Hagerstown, on Tuesday July 22, 2014, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Mike Louia officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.

Friends will be received from 7-9pm on Monday at the funeral home and again one hour prior to the service.
