Carlos Alberto Herrera, 72, of McAllen, TX., entered into his Heavenly Father's arms on November 19, 2016, at the home of his daughter, in Hagerstown, MD.
Born October 25, 1944 in Alice, Texas, he was the son of the late Carlos Trevino and Elia Morin Herrera.
Carlos was a 1963 graduate of Benavides High School. He graduated from the ROTC program at Texas A&I University, Kingsville, and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. He was a member of the elite drill team, the King's Rifles.
He served as a Captain in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam war, where he was awarded a bronze star for his valor. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Organization. After his service in the Army, Carlos went on to pursue two master's degrees.
Carlos retired as Executive Director of Workforce Solutions, Inc., where he worked with the county government and key elected officials in South Texas. He was a board member of the Institute of Rural Development. He was also a licensed professional counselor.
He is survived by three children, Rick Herrera and wife Tina, Rebecca Ly and husband Tin, Virginia Heard and husband Al; eight grandchildren, Dalton Herrera, Elizabeth Herrera, Abrianna Herrera, Lauren Ly, Benjamin Ly, Aidan Heard, Claire Heard, and Sophia Heard, all residing in Hagerstown, MD. He is also survived by his beloved cousin, Robert Herrera and wife Mary Alice. He was preceded in death by his beloved cousin Viola Trujillo, and survived by her husband Tommy.
He treasured the time spent with his friends. He proudly served his country and he loved the Lord. His legacy of love and giving will live on in his grandchildren and all who knew him. GO COWBOYS!
Services will be held with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington D.C. A memorial service will be held in Benavides, Texas in January 2017.
