Catharine M. (Cass) Brockway, 95, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away on Friday, August 9, 2024 at Coffman Nursing Home. Born in Norristown, PA April 12, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Emanuel J. Gallagher, Jr. and Catharine Darby Gallagher of Conshohocken, PA. Cass had 3 brothers and 3 sisters, Emanuel (Buzz) Gallagher, 3rd, Joseph Gallagher, Mary Gallagher Hille, Paul Gallagher (deceased), Patricia Gallagher Givnish and Eileen Gallagher Diamond.Cass grew up in Conshocken and was a 1951 graduate of Chestnut Hill College with a BS in Chemistry. Upon graduation Cass was hired by E.I. DuPont deNemours & Co. and it was at DuPont that Cass met her husband of 69 years, William R. (Bill) Brockway. Cass and Bill resided in Utah, Ohio, West Virginia and New Jersey before coming to Hagerstown in 1967. Cass was a member of St. Ann Church, Hagerstown, MD for over 56 years and was a Eucharistic Minister, a member of the Altar Society and participated in the Loaves and Fishes program.Cass was a past member (and past president) of the Antietam Garden Club, a member of the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts Singer Society and Fountain Head Country Club.Cass was active in her children’s youth sports activities in the Hagerstown area for many years, including supporting them on the swim teams at both Northwood Club and the YMCA and on the baseball and softball diamonds.Cass was predeceased by her husband, Bill, in 2021 and is survived by her seven sons and two daughters. Cass is survived by 17 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.Services will be held Wednesday, August 14, 2024 at 11am at St. Ann Catholic Church, 1525 Oak Hill Avenue, Hagerstown, MD 21742.
