Charles Alan Cogan, 86, of Hagerstown, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at Somerford House in Hagerstown, MD.
Born on December 29, 1927 in Hopewell, PA., he was the son of the late Chester Roy and Dulcie (Hann) Cogan. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a sister, Miriam Hanks and brothers, Richard H., Henry W., J. Dean and James M. Cogan.
Married for 64 years, he was a wonderful and devoted husband of Minnie "Minkey" (Baughman) Cogan, whom he married two days after her 18th birthday.
Alan was a 1945 graduate of the Robert P. Smith High School of Yellow Creek, PA. In 1945 he joined the U.S. Navy and then transferred into the U.S. Airforce, earning the W.W.II Victory Award. He attended Juniata College on the G.I. Bill until getting married in 1950 and moving to Hagerstown for the rest of his life.
Alan was in the foundry industry all his life, starting as a metallurgist at Pangborn in 1950, then becoming foundry superintendent. Alan started his own foundry, Cogwell Industries, Inc. in Shippensburg in 1974 and another, Casting Technologies, Inc. in 1987 in Waynesboro, PA., with his son, Mark.
Alan attended Christ Reformed Church in Hagerstown most of his life, singing on the Church Choir for decades. Later in life Alan became a member of Salem Reformed Church.
Alan volunteered as a leader in Junior Achievement, and was also a member of Elks BPO Hagerstown Lodge #378.
Alan was a loving and caring father of two, Debra Gingrich and husband Dale of Rockville, MD and Mark Cogan of Greencastle, PA. He is also survived by five cherished grandchildren, Dr. Matt Gingrich and wife Brittany, Cpt. Dana Gingrich and wife Carlie, Lt. Trevor Gingrich, Raeven Cogan and Coramina Rose Cogan.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30am on Saturday, December 13, 2014 at Salem Reformed Church, 13182 Salem Church Road, Hagerstown. Family will receive friends and loved ones starting at 10:30am.
