In Paris he met Joan Gooden, from Delaware who was in the State Department Foreign Service. They married in 1969 and settled into ranching in South Dakota for a time. After graduating, he founded Automated Sport Machines and officiated tennis from college to the professional ranks, including the finals of many events including the US Open. He retired from officiating in 2000. He continued to operate the tennis equipment company until 2010, selling the business and retiring.
