Daniel Lee Pheil

September 13, 1950 — February 19, 2015

Daniel Lee Pheil, 64, of Hagerstown, died unexpectedly at his home on Thursday, February 19th, 2015. He was born September 13th, 1950 in Chambersburg, PA, the only child of the late Harry C. Pheil and Mary Helen Knepper Pheil.

He was married to Bonnie J. Brown Pheil.

Dan attended Waynesboro area schools and graduated from Waynesboro High School. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Pittsburgh, PA. He also attended Bradley University in Peoria, IL for his Masters of Business Administration.

Dan previously held titles of President and Chief Executive Officer of Cinetic Landis Corp and was instrumental in bringing the company to Washington County from Waynesboro, PA. in 2008. Starting with Landis in 1974, Pheil rose through the ranks of the company, working most recently as an upper-level executive under its parent company, Fives Group Inc., a French-owned conglomerate specializing in industrial engineering and equipment across the globe. Dan had previously become president of Landis in December 2001, and then assumed the role of President/CEO when acquired by Fives in December 2005.

During his time working in Washington County, Dan exhibited a strong commitment to the community through the many committees and advisory councils in which he served. He took great pride in trying to help Washington County, MD and specifically the City of Hagerstown, become a better place to live and work.  He was well respected and admired for his business sense and quiet resolve. In 2011, he was appointed to the county's Economic Development Commission board, serving until 2014. His three years included stints as board chairman, as well as involvement on the Site Development and Regulations Committee and the Task Force on developing the 2013 Economic Development Strategic Plan for Hagerstown - Washington County. He was an active member of The Greater Hagerstown Committee including serving on their Executive Board and testifying at state and federal business roundtables on economic development.

Dan was of Christian faith and attended Grindstone Hill Lutheran Church in Chambersburg, PA. while growing up. He was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity at University of Pittsburgh, member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Waynesboro, PA., as well as a member of Redman Tribe No. 84 of Williamsport, MD.

Dan loved Pitt Panther football (Let's go Pitt!), and as a dedicated season ticket holder since 1972, he thoroughly enjoyed the time spent around his alma mater with family. He liked spending his free time reading, and was considered a proficient grill-master by family and friends. At the end of the week, Dan felt the best way to relax and wind down was to delight in a glass of fine scotch. He was passionate about spending time with his 9-year-old granddaughter, Amelia Grace (Gracie), who was truly the apple of his eye.  He especially treasured watching her volleyball games.

While many knew Dan for his remarkable work ethic and character, he was also appreciated for his dry sense of humor and clever wit. He loved leading the family on their annual trip to the Outer Banks, NC and enjoyed music, especially of The Rolling Stones and The Who.

Dan will be dearly missed by his wife Bonnie, daughter Tricia L. Johnson, and granddaughter Amelia Grace Johnson.

A memorial service will be held at Rest Haven Funeral Home in Hagerstown on Saturday February 28th at 2pm. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service.
