Donald Elwood Donat

Donald Elwood Donat, 84, of Hagerstown, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 22, 2014 at his home. He is survived by his beloved wife, partner and best friend of 64 years, Gloria Harris Donat, whom he married on September 16, 1950.

Born June 5, 1930, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Emerson Elwood and Mary Irene (Schlotterbeck) Donat.

Don was a 1949 graduate of Hagerstown High School.

At age 17 Don joined the Marine Corp. Reserves serving two years before joining the US Air Force where he served an additional four years.

He retired after 34 years of service as a PBX repair technician with AT&T (formerly C&P Telephone Company).

Don was a life member of the Communication Workers of America; a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church in Hagerstown; American Legion Post #42; Masonic Friendship Lodge #84; Tall Cedars of Lebanon; Eagles Club, Inc. of Waynesboro; Korean War Veterans Association, Inc.; Elks Lodge #378, where he served many years on the Americanism committee administering the Eagle Scout presentations.; Harry D. Zeigler VFW Post No. 6319 in Greencastle; NRA; and the Williamsport Red Men Tribe #84.

Don's hobbies including gardening and genealogy research. He most enjoyed spending time in the company of his many friends, telling great stories and providing a good humor joke. Don never met a stranger!

In addition to his wife, Don is survived by his son, Larry Donat and spouse Linda of Medina, OH; his daughter, Julie Donat and spouse Patricia Westgate of Frederick; a grandson, Nick Lewis of Medina, OH; and his best buddy the feline Tux.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00pm on Wednesday, November 26, 2014 at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with Pastor Patrick Ricker officiating. Interment will be private.

Friends will be received one hour prior to and after the funeral service for fellowship and refreshments at the funeral home.
