Donald Eugene "Don" Smith, 84, of Hagerstown, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at his home.
Born November 14, 1933 in Smithsburg, he was the son of the late John Raymond and Lola Blanche (Fishack) Smith.
Don was a 1951 graduate of Smithsburg High School.
He was a veteran of the United States Navy.
He was the president and treasurer of the former Stoddard Supply Company in Hagerstown. He also worked for Allegheny Electronics after they bought the business.
Don was a member of Maugansville Bible Brethren. There he served as deacon and usher. He was a former member of the First Brethren Church in Hagerstown, where he was the Sunday school superintendent, trustee, deacon, usher and treasurer. He also helped in the nursery school the fourth Sunday of every month. Don enjoyed dancing and was a member of both the Hagerstown and Cumberland Valley Country Western Dance Associations. He was also a member of the Maugansville Ruritan Club for 48 years, where he was past president.
Don enjoyed spending time outdoors whether it be fishing, hunting, or camping. More than anything else, he enjoyed spending time with his family.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Frances Rolene "Fran" (Stoddard) Smith; a son, Donald E. Smith, Jr.; a daughter, Dee Anderson and husband Jimmy, all of Sharpsburg; four grandchildren, Mindy Dietrich and husband Christian, Jenna Koska, Brett Anderson and wife Kelsie, Kara Smith; three great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Gene Shulz; a sister-in-law, Edith "Sam" Smith; family friend, DeeDee Rudisill; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by five siblings, John "Bill Smith, Jim Smith, Bob Smith, Joyce Shulz, Dick Smith; and sister-in-law, Pat Smith. Don was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Friday, March 2, 2018 at Rest Haven Funeral Home, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with Pastor Chad Carter officiating. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
