It is with deep sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Dorothy E. (Overcash) Smith, a cherished member of the Hagerstown, MD community. Dorothy, 98, departed on Saturday, November 11, 2023, at the Meritus Medical Center. She was born to the late Frank Victor and Charlotte Eleanor Martin on June 14, 1925, Flag Day, in Englewood, New Jersey. Her departure on Veterans Day further cements her legacy as a consummate American patriot.
A proud alumna of Hagerstown High School, Class of 1943, Dorothy was an embodiment of community spirit and service. Her fulfilling journey included serving as a Foremen Chaplain at the Morris Frock American Auxiliary Legion #42 and being an active member of the 8th Air Force Historical Society. Her consistent presence at 35 annual reunions of the 493rd BG
Memorial Association was a testament to her dedication.
A woman of faith, Dorothy was a lifetime member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Leitersburg. She was instrumental in initiating the Leitersburg Peach Festival and volunteered her time at the VA Clinic in Hagerstown and the Leitersburg Fire Company Auxiliary.
She also worked at Landis Tool, Sears, and Doubleday and Company as a proofreader, managing to balance her professional commitments and community service seamlessly.
She was predeceased by her husbands, Nevin M. Overcash and John Alvey Smith, her sister Constance C. Zeigler, and her stepsons David R. Overcash and Steven A. Smith.
She leaves behind her two sons, Gregory L. Overcash (Mary) and Bradley L. Overcash (Peggy), her stepdaughter Karen A. Wagner (J.D.), her grandson Christopher L. Overcash (Gail), and her step-granddaughter, Heather E. McAreavy (Bill). Two great granddaughters, Grace and Claire Overcash, and many step grandchildren and step great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held on November 17, 2023, at 2:00 P.M. at Rest Haven Funeral Home, 1601 Pennsylvania Avenue, Hagerstown, MD, with interment following at Rest Haven Cemetery. Family and friends are welcome to pay their respects from 6-8 P.M. on Thursday, November 16, 2023.
