Earl Richard (Dick) Martin, 72, of Hagerstown MD passed away Tuesday Aug. 26, 2014 at 12:45am at his home from many strokes coming from Parkinson's and Lyme Disease. He was
born on July 17, 1942 in Hagerstown MD and was the son of the late Earl T. and Emma S.(Ambrose) Martin and the Grandson of Charles C. and Carrie (Lung) Martin as well as the
grandson of John W. and Emma (Mullenix) Ambrose. He was a graduate of Boonsboro High
School class of 1960 and attended Hagerstown Junior College. He was employed over the years
at Sewards Paint Co., Central Chemical, Western Auto Store, Grove Mfg. Co., Antietam Iron Works, Ingersoll Rand Co. and many others including Dutcher Motors. He was a member of Trinity
Lutheran Church of Smithsburg, where he served as a former usher and a member of the church
council. He was a former 4-H Project Leader and associate member of the MD 4-H All Stars.
He was a good shooter and team captain of the former Grove Mfg. Trap League. He pulled for
clay bird shoots all over the Tri-State area. in his younger years he loved to play volleyball on his
lunch hour. He was a member of North American Rod and Gun Club and was a former member of
the Greencastle Sportsman Club. He also enjoyed hunting mushrooms as well as going deer and
turkey hunting with his buddy Gary L. Eyler. He was a quiet gentle man as well as kind and even
tempered who was dedicated to his family. He was born, raised, and worked on his family farm
where they raised milk cows, fruits and vegetables, chickens and hogs. He collected baseball
cards, coins and antique cars. Dick is survived by his wife of 52 years Patricia C (Stouffer) Martin
and daughters Marilyn J. Miner and husband Harold C., Michell J. Berkey and husband Jonathan
M. along with his grandchildren, Christa R. and Lyndsey A Miner, and Joel M. and Mary Ellen
Berkey. He will be sadly missed by his brothers, C. John Martin and wife Linda of Winchester Va,
and Gary L. Martin and wife Rose of Waynesboro Pa, along with many nieces and nephews, many friends and church family, one aunt and many cousins. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a grandson Steven W. Miner and a nephew Jason A. Martin. A memorial service will be held on Saturday Aug. 30, 2014 at 1pm at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel 1601 Pennsylvania Ave Hagerstown with the Rev. Virgil F. Cain officiating, committal service will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested Dick be remembered with a contribution to Trinity Lutheran Church of Smithsburg P.O. Box 217 Smithsburg MD 21783, to the Hospice of Washington County 747 Northern Ave Hagerstown MD 21742, the Humane Society of Washington County, 13011 Maugansville Rd, or to his former church St. Matthews Lutheran Church, 9714 Beaver Creek Church Rd. Hagerstown MD. 21740. The Family wishes to thank the many doctors, nurses and nursing homes who helped his quality of life through his 25 years of illness. A special thanks to the staff of Smithsburg Family Medical Center and Dr. Gail Callaway and nurse Alice, David Stratton and Kim Smallhorn, as well as the Potomac Case Management and his many other nurses and caregivers.
