Edwin James Carl
November, 1926 - January 21, 2014
Edwin James Carl, formerly of Crofton Road, Hagerstown, died at home in his Homewood Cottage on Tuesday, January 21st, 2014. He was the son of Elmer and Mildred Schindel Reisner Carl and the husband of Alleen Grove Reid Carl.
He graduated from Hagerstown High in 1945, taking the accelerated course in order to join the Merchant Marines. He attended the University of Maryland, and Maryland Law School. He was involved in the family businesses; The Potomac Diner, and Carl's Sundries. He served two years in the Army during the Korean Conflict.
He was employed by the Maryland State Tax Assessment Department, ending his 30-year career as the assistant state supervisor.
A lifelong philatelist, his world-wide stamp collection made him an expert in history and geography. He was a life member of Ali Ghan Shrine, Knights Templer, Tall Cedars, Friendship Lodge #84, The Elks Club, Morris Frock American Legion, and Cumberland Valley Fireman's Association.
He was christened in Trinity Lutheran Church, as were his mother and grandmother, and was a lifelong member.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, three daughters; Mindy Carl, Elizabeth Carl Beachley, and Jamie Carl Bushong, sons-in law Edward Beachley, and Bruce Bushong, seven grandchildren; Carly, Cassandra, and Benjamin Bushong, Christianna, Mariel, and Teddy Beachley, and Alexander Hulfish.
His only sibling, Gertrude Carl Morsberger of Catonsville, died Wednesday, January 22nd, 2014.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington Country, or Trinity Lutheran Church.
All services will be held on Saturday, January 25th at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown. Visitors are welcomed at 10:00am, a Masonic Ceremony will be held at 10:30am, followed by the funeral service at 11:00am. Burial will follow in the family plot at Rest Haven Cemetery, with Rev. Greg Shook officiating.
