Elle graduated from Hagerstown High School in 1951, and graduated from the Union Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1954, where she earned her Registered Nurse degree.
Elle married the love of her life, the late Richard Lightner, on April 30, 1955. They moved to Montgomery County, MD in 1959, when Dick accepted a job with what is now Bank of America. Elle was recognized by the Mayor and City Council of Gaithersburg, MD for her service to the youth of that community. She was also active in the PTA and served in various capacities.
A devoted and dedicated member of Trinity United Church of Christ in State Line, PA, Elle served as a deacon, elder, president of the consistory, program chairman, and lead the prayer team. In 2009, she began a ministry to feed the homeless every week in the City Market parking lot. She partnered with Life House and participated in other events for the hungry and homeless. Elle’s long and dedicated service also included being a member of the Alumni Association of Union Memorial School of Nursing, the Maryland Health Care Professional Volunteer Corps, and providing food and activities for Holly Place, an assisted living facility in Hagerstown.
A loving and devoted mom, Elle is survived by her daughter Susan Sagarin and son-in-law Mark Sagarin of Montgomery Village, MD; and her son John Lightner and his fiancee Allison Kent of San Diego, CA.
