Elizabeth Gertrude "Libby" Penner, 101, formerly of Woodpoint Ave., went to be with her Lord Jesus Christ and her husband on Saturday, May 4, 2019 at Charlotte's Home, in Maugansville, where she resided for the past 7 years.
Born February 12, 1918, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late George Clifford and Minnie Gertrude (Hill) Miller. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her loving husband of 49 years, George Charles Penner; a sister, Leola Wilhide; three brothers, Beaudric, Charles, and Stanley Miller; and a great-granddaughter, Olivia Penner.
Libby and George were married in 1945 at the Grace Church Parsonage by the late Rev. I.G. Rider.
She took several jobs over the years working at Porter Chemical Co. in the microscope dept., the Maryland Ribbon Factory; the cafeteria dept. of Salem Ave. Elementary School; and Riesener Manufacturing Co., assembling components for the war effort during WW2. Her most treasured position was being a homemaker. She took pride in her home and yard. Many thought it resembled a page out of Better Home's and Garden's magazine.
Libby volunteered with the United Service Organizations Inc. (USO). She was a member of the Interstate Coin Club, alongside her husband, being the oldest member by both seniority and age. She was a golden member of Grace Church, joining in 1936; a Temple Builders Class Member and board of child care; and a member of AARP. She enjoyed traveling, especially to Myrtle Beach; dancing at Pen Mar Park; and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who lovingly called her "Nan Nan".
Libby is survived by her loving son, Gary Lee Penner and wife Sherry of Hagerstown; two grandsons, Doug Penner and wife Leigh of Virginia Beach and their daughter's, Jillian and Madelyn Penner, and Robert Penner of Hagerstown and his children, Taylor, Mathew C., Mary E., and Ethan C. Penner; her brother, George E. Miller, also of Hagerstown; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00pm on Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at Rest Haven Funeral Home, 1601 PA Ave., Hagerstown, with Pastor Margaret Clemons officiating. Burial will be private in Rest Haven Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service and again following for a light lunch reception at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to Grace U.M.C., Improvement Fund, 712 W. Church St., Hagerstown, MD 21740.
