Elizabeth Virginia Ross (Liz), passed away peacefully on January 2, 2023. Sugar, as she was known to her family, was born in Clear Spring MD on May 6,1942 to the late Frank and Ruth Carpenter. Liz was preceded in death by seven brothers, Conrad, William (Bill), James (Jim), Verden Leroy (Joe), Frank, Phillip, and John Carpenter. She is survived by a brother Robert (Bob) and four sisters, Flora (Peg), Nancy, Sally, and Amy (Cookie).
Liz was married for 39 years to the late George S. Ross Jr. and is survived by her two children, Mike Ross and Cindy Armstrong, their spouses, six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and 35 nieces and nephews.
Liz was a military veteran who proudly upheld the family tradition and served in the US Air Force from 1960 to 1962. Liz was a proficient student and was a member of the Honor Role Society at Clear Spring High School. Liz continued her education and received her MBA and MSM from Frostburg State University in 1985. She was employed by the Washington County Hospital in the Medical Lab for 32 years.
Liz was an avid athlete and enjoyed volleyball, softball and bowling much of her life. She was a prodigious reader and she traveled much of the US. Liz was a devoted member of the St. Johns United Church of Christ in Clear Spring. She began attending there when she was a young girl and continued to attend except when Liz and Bill, her husband were in the Air Force and stationed elsewhere.
Liz was a member of a large family (12 siblings) and loved to be with all of them and hosted many Family Reunions at the old home place on Fairview Mountain in Clear Spring.
Liz lived a very blessed life, and she will be sorely missed and fondly remembered. The family will receive friends from 6-8pm on Tuesday, January 17, 2023 at Rest Haven Funeral Home, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742.
A funeral service will be held at 11am on Wednesday, January 18, 2023 at Rest Haven Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park in Hagerstown.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Community Foundation of Washington County for the Frank M. & Ruth N. Carpenter Family Scholarship Fund 37 S Potomac St., Hagerstown, MD 21740.
