Hagerstown, MD Elmer T. Hixon, 97, World War II veteran from Cumberland, Md., passed away peacefully on Friday, May 30, 2014 in State Line, Pa.
Born in Hancock, Md., he was the son of the late Elmer Truax and Mary (Kellner) Hixon. He also was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Janiece Margaret (Hinkle) Hixon, and seven brothers and sisters; Walter Hixon, Davis Hixon, Gail Hixon, Evelyn Hixon, Lois Wolford, Ruth Bivens and Joseph Hixon.
Elmer served as a First Mechanic, Technician Fourth Grade in the Headquarters Battery, 902nd Field Artillery, 77th Division. Battles and campaigns included the Southern Philippines and Western Pacific. After the war, he worked as a railroad engineer for the Chessie System for 37 years and retired in 1978. He is a member of NAVRE Retired and Veterans Railroad Employees, a member of Masonic Lodge 173 A.F. & A.M., Hancock, Md., since 1938 and the VFW Post 96.
He is survived by four children, Barbara (Henry) Semczak of Bloomfield Hills, Mi., Joann (Kenneth) Romanski of West Hills, Ca., Ronald (Cynthia) Hixon of Arbutus, Md., and Donna (Phil) Young of State Line, Pa.; seven grandchildren, Michael, Jessica, Davis, Daniel, Claire, Andrew and Emma; two sisters, Mary Ellen Bohrer of Hagerstown, Md. and Nancy Ayers of Montgomery, Tx.; a brother, Lowell Hixon of Hancock and many nieces and nephews.
At his request, his body will be cremated.
Friends will be received on Saturday, June 7, 2014 from 10:00 - 11:00 A.M. at Centre Street United Methodist Church, 217 N. Centre St., Cumberland, Md. A memorial service will follow in the church at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Ann V. Atkins officiating.
Inurnment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park where military honors will be accorded.
