Elsie Hawn Holloway

Elsie H. Holloway of Hagerstown, MD, passed away in her sleep Saturday, July 1, 2023 at Somerford House Assisted Living, Hagerstown, MD.

Born November 1, 1922, in McKeesport, PA, she was the daughter of the late Gertrude B. McCoole and John Alan Hawn. Elsie was an only child. She married Gerald E. Holloway on May 18, 1954. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years in 2003.

Elsie and Gerry both enjoyed traveling. Elsie loved dancing and going to museums and parks. She always enjoyed learning new things and attended seminars presented by the Institute for Retired Persons at Wilson College in Chambersburg, PA.

Elsie was a 1940 graduate of Roosevelt High School in Washington, DC and attended classes at Georgetown University.

During WWII, Elsie worked for the US Army Chemical Warfare Department and after the war became a secretary at the Office of Management and Budget, rising to the level of Executive Secretary during her 37 years working there.

Elsie was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Hagerstown where she sang in the choir and served as Greeter. She was a Charter Member of the St. John's Episcopal Legacy Society.

Elsie is survived by her cousin Jane Hixson and second cousin, David Hixson and his wife, Catherine, all of Hagerstown.

A service will be held Monday, July 10, 2023 at 1:00PM at Rest Haven Funeral Home, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, Maryland. Interment will follow at Rest Haven Cemetery.

Friends and family will be received at the funeral home on Sunday, July 9, 2023 from 4-6PM.
