Elder Garfield Snyder, 93, of Hagerstown, passed away on Monday, June 12, 2017 at Meritus Medical Center.
Born December 22, 1923 in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Elder G. Snyder, Sr. and Emma K. (Herbert) Kenter Snyder.
Elder was a proud veteran of the United States Army. During WWII, he served as a pigeoneer, raising and training homing pigeons for Army communications and reconnaissance purposes. He continued training and racing pigeons in competitions as a hobby for years after the war. Elder's military service decorations include the Army Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon, and the WWII Victory Ribbon.
Prior to the war, Elder worked for Union Delivery, delivering telegrams in Hagerstown. After the war, he worked for Fairchild Aircraft and as a material handler for Mack Truck, from where he retired in 1985.
He was a member of Christ Reformed Church in Hagerstown and was a lifetime member of AmVets Post 10, VFW Post 1936, American Legion Post 42, and the Williamsport Red Men Tribe #84.
Elder took pride in knowing the town inside and out, and he possessed an uncanny memory for names, places and events. He was an avid walker, walking 5 miles daily rain or shine for over 25 years!
He is survived by numerous nieces, nephews; great-nieces, great-nephews, and his special friend and caregiver, Darlene Maloy.
Elder was the last surviving member of his immediate family. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years, Mary A. Snyder; five brothers, Raymond Snyder, twins Herbert and Robert Snyder, William Snyder and Edwin Snyder; two half-sisters, A. Virginia Moyer and Dorothy Glessner; and two half-brothers, Claude Kentner, Jr. and Wellington Kentner, Jr.
A graveside service will be held at 10:30am on Monday, June 19, 2017 at Rest Haven Cemetery, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown. Interment will follow with military honors rendered by the Maryland State Honor Guard.
