Harold Sylvester DeLauter

Harold Sylvester DeLauter, 86, of Hagerstown, Md., passed away Monday, May 1, 2017, at Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown.

Born Sept. 30, 1930, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Earl Clayton and Mary C. (Ausherman) DeLauter.

In addition to his parents, he also was preceded in death by three brothers, Lawson C. DeLauter, Clarence H. DeLauter and Donald L. DeLauter. Harold was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Harold retired with 23 years of service as a buyer for the Pangborn Corp. Harold was a member of First Christian Church, Hagerstown. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Alaska during the Korean War. He was an honorary life member and past commander of the Morris Frock Post 42, American Legion, life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1936, life member of the AmVets Post 10, Korean War Veterans Association, Antietam Chapter 312, all of Hagerstown, the Eagles Club Inc., Waynesboro, a member of Freestaters Drum and Bugle Corps, and marched in the American Legion National Convention and also in the VFW national contest in Baltimore. He chaired and served on the Hagerstown High School Reunion Committee, Class of 1949.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Betty Loraine (Nigh) DeLauter and his lovable dog, Ginger; two nephews, Ronald N. DeLauter, and Roger L. DeLauter and wife, Cindy; three great-nephews, Ronald, Thad and Kevin DeLauter; one great-niece, Danielle Ruble, and a sister-in-law, Dorothy DeLauter.

Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, May 6, 2017, at 2 p.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Home, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Richard Hembrock and lay minister Jerry Norris officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by the Morris Frock Post 42 Honor Guard. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion Building Fund, 405 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742.
