Harry Edward Gruber, a retired Aberdeen police officer who attained the rank of Major/Deputy Chief during his 25-year career there, died on Wednesday, February 12, 2025. He was 84 years old. He was born September 17, 1940 to Isaac E Gruber, machinist, and Esther L. Gruber, housewife. Graduating from Hagerstown High School in 1958, he enlisted in the Navy serving as a radioman on the destroyer USS New. Upon his discharge he worked as a telegrapher at Western Union in Aberdeen until joining the Aberdeen Police Department on August 1, 1970 and retiring July 1, 1995.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Donna Marie (nee Barnhart) Gruber, a son Gregory E. Gruber and his wife, Donna Steps, and grandsons Matthew and Michael Gruber.
He was a member of the American Legion, Post 42 in Hagerstown, MD and the Havre de Grace United Methodist Church. He was a Civil War buff and liked to fish, read, cook and loved spending time with his son and grandsons.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 18 from 1-3pm and 6-8pm at the Tarring-Cargo Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at Rest Haven Cemetery 1601 Pennsylvania avenue., Hagerstown, MD with military honors.
