Hazel Ruth Thomas, 83, of Hagerstown, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2011, at Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown.
Born Aug. 11, 1927, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Robert Boyd and Nellie Blanche (Booher) Alter.
She was a member of Hagerstown Bible Church and had served on the Washington County Hospital Auxiliary for 18 years.
She had worked for Love and L'Aiglon Dress Factories, Manny's Oriental Rugs and the Pangborn Corp., all of Hagerstown.
Hazel is survived by three daughters, Karen Sue Starkey and husband, Michael, Debra A. MacKenzie and husband, Cameron, and Kathy L. Shaool and husband, Ben, all of Hagerstown; eight grandchildren, Sandra Miller, Jamie Lafferty, Ian, Colin and Evan MacKenzie, and David, Dustin and Daniel Shaool; and seven great-grandchildren, Ariella, Sophia, Shirel and Yousef Shaool, Samuel Shaool, Benyamin Shaool and Ray Summers.
In addition to her parents, she also was preceded in death by her husband, Robert F. Thomas; a son, Robert F. Thomas Jr.; a daughter, Donna Kae Stottlemyer; a granddaughter, Pamela Sue Starkey; a brother, Arthur Alter; and a sister, Mary Goetz.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with the Revs. Dr. Curvin Stambaugh and Dr. Gerald D. Carbaugh officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.
Friends will be received at the funeral home Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.
