Howard James Garton

Howard James "Jim" Garton, 85, of Hagerstown, passed away on Saturday, February 14, 2015 at NMS Healthcare.

Born August 15, 1929 in Diana,WV, he was the son of the late Virgie (Cutlip) Armstrong and William Ernest Garton.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Army.

He retired after 50 years as the owner and operator of Garton Electric Service in Hagerstown, MD.

Jim was and avid golfer and duckpin bowler. He was one of the top 20 bowlers in Washington County for several years.

Jim was a member of the First Baptist Church in Hagerstown and was a former member of Beaver Creek Country Club.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Helen M. (Smith) Garton; two daughters, Carla Quimby, Vicki Grimm and husband Rodger all of Hagerstown; two granddaughters, Leslie Phillips and husband Andrew of Boonsboro, Megan Quimby of Hagerstown; three great-granddaughters, Ashley Phillips, Alyssa Phillips, Kiana Cochrane; a sister, Vera Kennedy of Hagerstown; a half-brother, Larry Garton of Frostburg; and three half-sisters, Carol Mellott of Cumberland, Linda Morton of Ridgely, WV., and Mary Ann Cummings of Frostburg.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Kelso, Charlotte Dixon; and one brother, Edward Garton.

A memorial service will be conducted at 1:00pm on Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Thom Smith officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the Maryland State Honor Guard. Inurnment will be private.

Friends will be received from 6-8pm on Tuesday at the funeral home, and again one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.
