Ira Paul Kauffman Jr., 86, passed away at his home in Hagerstown on January 6, 2019.
Ira was born to the late Helen Pauline Seville and Ira Paul Kauffman, Sr. He was born and raised in Hagerstown, and took pride in being an active member of the Hagerstown community.
He was a 1950 graduate of Hagerstown High School.
Ira and his wife, Nancy, were lifelong members of Zion Evangelical & Reformed Church, on N. Potomac St., in Hagerstown, where they were married on June 1, 1952, and where he taught Sunday School and the youth fellowship. In the last several years, he enjoyed Father Steve's visits.
He was a member of the Hagerstown City Council and the Maryland State Democratic Central Committee. He was a former Hagerstown City Councilman from 1977-1981.
Ira was a drafting engineer and surveyor by trade. He worked for the City of Hagerstown, Fairchild Aircraft Co., Western MD RR, and Pennsylvania Glass Sand. He retired from the Federal Government (CIA), after having duty stations on military bases and embassies around the world; to include East Germany, when it was behind the wall and under the control of the Soviet Union.
He was an avid Notre Dame and Washington Redskins fan. Ira was a family man and enjoyed spending time with them. He also enjoyed going to Charlestown Races and watching the horse racing.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Marilyn Kauffman.
He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Nancy Louise "Nowell" Kauffman; three children, Stephen Kauffman and his wife Georgie of Hagerstown; Chuck Kauffman and wife Pattie of Clear Spring; Angela Harman of Hagerstown; his brother, Donald Kauffman of Hagerstown; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00pm on Friday, January 11, 2018, at Rest Haven Funeral Home, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with Father Steven L. McCarty officiating. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6-8pm on Thursday at the funeral home.
