Ivan B. (Slug) Shingler, 88, went home to be with his Lord and Saviour, on Wednesday, March 15, 2017.
Born on December 13, 1928 in Hagerstown, MD he was the son of the late Richard D. and Florence R. (Smith) Shingler Parsons and the stepson of the late Gold B. Parsons.
At age 17 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. During his time in service, he was aboard the USS Gasconade APA85 and participated in OPERATION CROSSROADS, Joint Task Force One Atomic Bomb Tests to test the effect of the atomic bomb on naval vessels, conducted at Bikini Atoll, Marshall Islands in July, 1946.
He worked for Coca-Cola and Western MD Railway in his early years and later for Puralator Courier and was area supervisor at the time of his retirement.
He was a member of the Calvary Grace Brethren Church in Hagerstown and Morris Frock American Legion. He was an avid golfer and bowler.
He is survived by his wife of what would have been 69 years on April 3, Ruth N. (Keiter) Shingler; sons; Christopher and his wife Kathy, and Anthony and his wife Darla of Hagerstown; daughters; Bonnie Spooner of Williamsport, and Vickie Brunner and her husband Gerald of Hagerstown, daughter-in-laws; Karen and Kim Shingler of Hagerstown and Tammy Jo Shingler of Greencastle, PA, grandchildren; Allen Moody, Brandi Lee Pine, Ashley Lady, Brad Shingler, Gary Lee and Brandon Shirley, Angel McClintock, Elayne Seiler, Pamela Molina and Amber, Grady, Jeb, Colton and Britney Shingler, great-grandchildren; Jessica and Joshua Moody, Colby Shingler, Seth Lady, Daniel, Elizabeth and Mariam McClintock, Ryan Seiler, Tristan and Addie Shingler, as well as a dear friend who was like a daughter to him, Patty Brierley.
In addition to his parents and his stepfather, he was preceded in death by his sons, Ivan Brad Shingler and Michael Lynn Shingler; son-in-law, Roy Spooner and granddaughter, Dawn Marie Shingler.
The family will receive friends on Monday, March 20, 2017 at Rest Haven Funeral Home, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave, Hagerstown, from 12 noon to 2 p.m. with services, burial with military honors, and a reception, immediately following the visitation. Pastor Jay Fretz will officiate.
