James Christopher Kelly, 78, of Hagerstown, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones at his home. Born September 4, 1946, in Cumberland, Md., Jim was the son of the late John Kelly and Genevieve Remley. Alongside his parents, James was preceded in death by his beloved son, Christopher Kelly.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Sharon L. (Metz) Kelly; two brothers, Lawrence Kelly and Kevin Kelly; one sister, Julianne Ferris; his sons, Mike Pry, Shannon Kelly, D.J. Stouffer, and Michael Stouffer; grandchildren, Ryan, Shawn, Natalie, Kayle, Mikey, Emily, Mike, Dylan, Claudia, Michael Jr. and Jakob and his great grandchildren, Xander, Aayla and Jack.
Jim raised a Catholic, found solace and strength in his faith. He served his country with honor as a US Army veteran during the Vietnam War, demonstrating bravery and dedication to his fellow soldiers. Following his military service, he became an esteemed member of the Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion in Hagerstown, where he continued to embody the principles of service and camaraderie.
Professionally, Jim was not just a carpenter but a master craftsman, renowned for his skill and creativity. He had an innate talent for building, especially when it came to constructing tree houses and kids' forts, where his imagination knew no bounds. His craftsmanship brought joy to countless children and grandchildren over the years.
Throughout his life, he embarked on many career paths, reflecting his diverse skills and interests. From repairing rental properties in his youth to owning his own taxicab service, performing estimations for housing projects, and even a used car dealership; his career journey was as dynamic as it was fulfilling. However, his true passion always lay in carpentry, a calling he returned to time and time again.
Beyond his professional pursuits, Jim acquired a lifetime of wisdom that he generously shared with others. He lived in many different places, from Maryland to Virginia, Minnesota to South Dakota, and Florida, each location adding depth and richness to his experiences. James found joy in being surrounded by family, whether it was building kids' forts, vacationing, camping, or embarking on adventures across the United States.
Jim will be deeply missed by all who knew him, remembered not only for his skilled hands and kind heart but also for his unwavering love and zest for life. His legacy of craftsmanship, wisdom, and love will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Services to honor and celebrate Jim’s life will be held at the Chapel of the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery-Rocky Gap. The ceremony, including military honors, will be conducted by the Fort Cumberland Post 13 American Legion Combined Honor Guard from Cumberland.

Jim's spirit will live on in the hearts of those he loved and touched, forever remembered for the light he brought into the world.
