Jane Elizabeth Hixson

Jane Hixson of Hagerstown passed away 27, January 2025, at 104 years at Somerford Place in Hagerstown, MD.

Born December 9, 1920, in Martinsburg, WV, she was the daughter of Charles and Bessie Hawn. Jane’s family moved to Hagerstown while she was a child. She attended Winter Street and Woodland Way public schools, graduating from Hagerstown High School in 1938.

During WWII, Jane opened Fairchild’s Aircraft’s office in Dayton, Ohio. After that office closed Jane went to work for the Ministry of Armaments and Supply of the Canadian Arme Forces in Washington, DC. When the war ended, Jane returned to Hagerstown, where she met Robert Hixson from the same high school graduating class. Mr. Hixson’s WWII service included aerial photo reconnaissance interpretation in the Alaskan Theater on Attu Island with the 404th Bomb Group. Post war he returned to his job at J.B. Ferguson’s Surveyors & Engineers.

They married in 1946 and had one son, David, who also married and had a son, Brian. Jane and Bob watched and helped Brian grow up. He married Jen Wilson after graduate school. They have three children. Jane enjoyed watching her great-grandchildren grow.

Jane worked in public health research with the National Cancer Institute in Hagerstown beginning in 1957. In 1968 she began doing statistical research for John’s Hopkins University’s School of Public Health office in Hagerstown. She worked there until Covid temporarily closed the office in 2020.

Jane and Bob were founding members of Paramount Baptist Church. Over the years they both held numerous positions at the church. Jane was preceded in death by her husband in 1992. She is survived by her son and his wife, Catherine, of Hagerstown. She is also survived by grandson Brian, his wife Jen and great grandchildren, Sarah (12), Abby (6), and John (3) all of West Chester, PA.

A funeral service will be held for Jane on Monday, February 3 at 10:00 a.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Home, 1601 Pennsylvania Avenue, Hagerstown, MD 21742 with interment to follow. On Sunday, February 2 a visitation will be held from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Home.
