Janet Leigh Bender, 78, of Hagerstown passed away, Tuesday, February 4, 2014, at Meritus Medical Center, Hagerstown.
Born December 27, 1935 in Gafney South Carolina she was the daughter of the late, Dufay and Arbutis (Parris) Blackwell. In addition she also was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Erwin Bender, II and a sister, Joann King.
Mrs. Bender was an interior designer for Maidstone, an avid artist and the proprietor of The Village Green in Shepherdstown.
She was a member of Paramount Baptist Church, Hagerstown. The Rotary International, The Small Business Association both of Shepherdstown and is credited with founding the annual Christmas in Shepherdstown, the Back Alley Garden Tour and the Tea and Easter Parade events.
She is survived by two sons, Harry E. Bender, III of Shepherdstown and Trace Andrew Bender and wife Renee of Greencastle; one daughter, Susan L. Bender of Hagerstown; five grandchildren, Jason Bender, Gannon Barrett, Trace Bender, II, Mark Grimes, II and Ashley Villa; three great grandchildren, Amanda, Brezlyn and Vitor Bender.
A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at 1:00 P.M. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown with the Rev. Don Stevenson officiating.
Friends will be received at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
