Jerry Lee Kendle

February 15, 1940 — November 24, 2021

After a life well-lived, Jerry Lee Kendle passed on November 24, 2021 in the comforting presence of his family. Jerry was born February 15, 1940 on the family farm in Beaver Creek Maryland. He is preceded in death by his parents Robert E. Kendle Sr, and Elizabeth J. (Sinnisen) Kendle, as well as one brother James E. Kendle. Jerry was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle to his beloved family. His memory will be cherished by his wife of 58 years, Charlotte A. (Forsythe) Kendle, a daughter Sharon A. Shields (Mark), and a son Faron D. Kendle (Megan), his 4 grandchildren, Branden L. Shields (Jessica Kyger), Brianna N. Shields (David Ballard), Cathryn J. Kendle, and Ryan A. Kendle, brothers Robert E. Kendle Jr (Glenda), William D. Kendle, and Steven R. Kendle (Patricia) and numerous nieces and nephews.Jerry graduated from Boonsboro High School in 1958 and then joined the US Navy. During his time, he was deployed on 4 aircraft carriers as a machinist mate circumnavigating the world. After leaving the Navy, Jerry started working for Western Maryland railroad at the Hagerstown round house while also continuing to serve in the reserves. Jerry again felt the call for full time service and re-enlisted into the US Coast Guard. This service period included orders to the USCG Cutter Reliance and the USCG Polar Star where he deployed twice to Antarctica. The call for adventure and opportunity continued and Jerry decided the US Army was the most appropriate ending to a highly successful military career. He retired in 1984 as a Chief Warrant Officer 2 and Chief Engineer within the 329th Transportation Company. Jerry continued to serve with the James River Reserve Fleet as a civilian Marine Mechanical Engineer until his full retirement in 2002. Jerry enjoyed his hobbies and readily shared his creations. Jerry was known and loved for his irrepressible sense of humor and unwavering optimism. He was a member of the Manor Church of the Brethren and attended services at Yorkmister Presbyterian. The family will receive visitors at Amory Funeral Home in Grafton, Virginia, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, November 30th.
