Joan Elizabeth “Jody” Trader Long, 82, of Hagerstown, passed away at 8:59 a.m. on December 9, 2016 in Hagerstown, Maryland.
She was born in Wabash, Indiana to the late Frank and Florence Bell Musselman Trader on November 6, 1934, and she grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Jody was a graduate of South Side High School in Fort Wayne, where she was a National Honor Society recipient. Throughout her life, she always remained close to several of her childhood friends.
She has been married for 54 years to Dr. Nicholas Long, her professor in Psychology at Indiana University in 1961. They were married on January 3, 1962 at the Foundry United Methodist Church in Washington, D.C. She was called Jody, “her nickname”, most of her life including during her Bachelor of Arts degree and Master of Arts degree from Indiana University, where she was an active member in the Phi Beta Phi sorority. She received her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology (with an emphasis in sex equity in the classroom) from American University, and served as Coordinator of the American University-Rose School program.
Jody served for many years in the Washington, D.C. school system as a Licensed School Psychologist. She has coauthored several books including The Angry Smile, and Conflict and Comfort in College as well as several professional articles on adolescents. She served on the Board of Directors of the Life Space Crisis Intervention Institute, dedicated to training special education professionals all over the world. Jody also served as President of the Singer Society at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts in Hagerstown, Maryland several terms. She greatly enjoyed giving Renaissance Art lectures for the museum. Jody volunteered her time with several Garden Clubs in our area, the local Newcomers group, and with The Maryland Symphony Orchestra. Jody was also an active member of the Torch Club. Her avocations included Italian Renaissance Art, interior design, reading, bridge, and entertaining guests with her beautiful piano playing.
Jody is survived by her spouse Nicholas Long; her three children Jennifer Coburn (married to Brooks Coburn), Mathew Long and Andrea Long; her two stepsons Warren Long (married to Sheryl Long) and Jeffrey Long (married to Kathy Long). She is also survived by her six grandchildren Taylor Long, Julia Coburn, Keith and Ryan Long, and Kara and Nolan Long.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 17, 2016 at the John Wesley United Methodist Church, 129 N Potomac St, Hagerstown, MD 21740 with Rev. L. Patrick “Pat” Ricker officiating. A reception for family and friends will follow at Fountainhead Country Club, 13316 Fountain Head Rd, Hagerstown, MD 21742 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
