John Joseph West, 63, of Hagerstown died Friday, May 31, 2013, at Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown.
Born July 26, 1949, in Hagerstown, he was the son of Donald E. and Joann (Guiliani) West, of Hagerstown.
John was a member of The First Christian Church in Hagerstown.
He was a 1967 graduate of South Hagerstown High School, where he achieved the following: football 1963 freshman team, varsity lettering 1964, 1965 and 1966; basketball 1965, 1966 and 1967, lettering in '66 and '67; baseball 1964, 1965, 1966 and 1967, lettering in '65, '66 and '67; track 1965, 1966 and 1967, lettering in '65, '66 and '67.
His honors included freshman class secretary, sophomore class vice president, senior class representative and class president, All Cumberland Valley Athletic League first team, Principals' award, Outstanding Athletic and Academic Achievement, All Tri-State first team 1966 and captain of the football team.
A graduate of Dickinson College, Class of 1971, graduating with honors and achieving the following: football, lettering in 1968, 1969 and 1970, leader in rushing in '69, 5.0-yard average and punting 34.5 average, most valuable back for season, leader in rushing in '70, 3.9 average.
Honors included Tri Captain 1970, first alternate NCAA post-graduate, Football scholarship, All Middle-Atlantic Conference 1970, Southern Division first team offensive halfback 1969, Pennsylvania Dutch Alternate halfback bowl game 1970, Red Devil award (two times) 1969, and ran track as a sprinter, 1968-69. He pursued his graduate education at Rutgers University, graduating with honors and received his certified public accountant certification from the state of New York.
John began his career with Price Water House in New York, moved to South Carolina and worked at the Lowenstein Corp. as a financial officer. He moved back to New York as a financial officer for the New York State Operated Hospitals. He returned to North Carolina and opened his own CPA office, which he operated until his retirement in 1997, after which he and his father went into the real estate business, buying, remodeling and selling properties.
He leaves his wife of 16 years, Mildred (O'Toole) West; a daughter, Elizabeth Marie Contompasis and husband, Phillip; a son, Matthew West, both from a previous marriage; four grandchildren, Adrianna, Samara, Cole and Troy; and one brother, Ronald West.
John was preceded in death by a brother, Donald E. West Jr. and a sister, Donna Marie West.
Graveside services will be private and held at the convenience of the family, with the Rev. Wayne Warren officiating.
