SSGT. Joseph Arthur Long, Jr., US Army Retired, of Mount Airy, formerly of Hagerstown, passed away, Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at Fahrney-Keedy Home and Village, Boonsboro.
Born November 3, 1930 in Hagerstown he was the son of the late, Joseph Arthur Long, Sr. and Helena Bright (Davis) Long. In addition to his parents he also was preceded in death by his loving wife Elizabeth Ann "Betty" (Ryan) Long and two siblings, Constance Noll and Joseph Moore.
SSGT Long was a former member of Grace United Methodist Church, Hagerstown. He also was a member of Friendship Lodge No. 84 A.F. & A.M., Hagerstown, York Rite of Freemasonry, Ali Ghan Shrine, Cumberland and the Hagerstown Forest No. 95 Tall Cedars of Lebanon; Morris Frock No. 42 American Legion where he also belonged to the Last Man's Club, the Gold Star No. 191 American Legion, Mount Airy and the Hagerstown V.F.W Post 1936.
SSGT Long served for over 20 years in the US Army and was a veteran of the Korean War.
He is survived by four children, Joseph A. Long III (Christy) of Mount Airy, Cheryl A. Cunningham (Gary) of Clear Spring, Mary Kay Baker of Hagerstown and Penelope D. Wyndham (James) of Gaithersburg; six siblings, Beverly Lapole and Patricia Long Crowther, both of Hagerstown, Robert Long of Boonsboro, Ronald Long of Williamsport, Donald Long of Big Pool and Robin Mastiano of Williamsport; eight grandchildren, Brandee Shipley (Sam), Dusty Caudell (Chris), Jodee Hawbaker (Jeromy), Angelia Cellucci (Michael), Kevin Baker (Tiffany), "J" Wyndham (Mandi), Ryan Wyndham and Ron Pendleton; eight great grandchildren, Cory, Jared, Caleb, Codi, Kayla, Tristan, Reece and Aiden.
A Masonic memorial service will be conducted by Friendship Lodge No. 84 A.F. & A.M. on Sunday, January 22, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. followed by a funeral service at 2:20 P.M. at Rest Haven Funeral Home, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown with Rev. Robert Cook officiating.
Friends will be received at the funeral home on Sunday one hour prior to services,.
Interment with full military honors will be accorded at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
