Joseph Christian Jr. Snavely

Joseph Christian Snavely Jr., 88, of Hagerstown, passed away quietly with his family present at Meritus Medical Center Saturday morning, July 23, 2011.
Born Sept. 3, 1922, in Philadelphia, Pa., he was the son of the late Joseph C. and Jennie Mae Leininger Snavely.
He was a graduate of Cheltenham High School and a pilot in the Army Air Corps during World War II, and a graduate of Rutgers University, where he majored in floriculture and ornamental horticulture. He was instrumental in the start of White Flower Farm in Litchfield, Conn., as its first manager. He then located to Hagerstown to become the manager of Sears Farm Store and later its Garden Center, and subsequently manager of Leamanâ??s Seed store in Hagerstown. He realized his dream to operate his own nursery with the purchase of The Garden Corner in Chambersburg, Pa., in 1971 and 15 years later opened a store in Hagerstown as well.
He was a very active member of Zion Evangelical and Reformed United Church of Christ, where he taught Sunday school and served on the consistory, as well as a deacon and elder.
Mr. Snavely was an active volunteer in the community, particularly with Meals on Wheels.
He is survived by four children, J. Christian III (wife Celeste) of Chambersburg, Jon Robert of Greencastle, Anne Marriott Snavely Stewart (husband Rob) of Carlisle and Page Louise Snavely Palmer of Hagerstown; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one brother, John E. Snavely of Mount Laurel, N.J.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Elaine Dean Marriott Snavely.
Services will be held Wednesday, July 27, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Zion Evangelical and Reformed United Church of Christ, 201 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown MD 21742, with the Rev. Kevin Munroe officiating.
Family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown.
Burial will be at Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown, at the convenience of the family.
