Kristin Lynn Slate (Miller), passed over on Friday, October 21, 2016, in Winston-Salem, NC. She was born in Hagerstown, MD, to Pamela Barnhart Slate and Charles R. Slate (Casey) on March 13, 1962.
Kris attended St. Mary's Catholic and Winter Street Elementary Schools in Hagerstown, MD, and Clayton Ave. and Summitview Elementary Schools in Waynesboro, PA. From there she attended Antietam Junior High School, also in Waynesboro, before her family returned to Hagerstown in 1977. Kris mingled her love of dancing with school spirit as a Rebelette in her first year at South Hagerstown High School, a high point she cherished, and graduated in 1980.
A few years after graduating high school, Kris found her passion at Washington County Hospital working in their OR. She began her medical career as an OR Tech there, where she excelled, before receiving a nursing degree in 1994 at Hagerstown Junior College. Her first job as a Registered Nurse was at Avalon Nursing Home, but later returned to Washington County Hospital as an OR nurse. She loved the challenge of the OR, but equally loved her geriatric patients at Avalon, so she worked full-time at Washington County and retained a part-time position at Avalon where she was later promoted to a supervisory level position.
After almost twenty years working a Washington County Hospital and Avalon Nursing Home, Kristin moved to Durham, NC, in 2007. Health issues prevented her from continuing her nursing career, but she never stopped missing it.
Kris loved her family, angels of every variety, TV magazine shows, and "I Love Lucy" reruns. But more than anything else in her life, Kris loved her Shih Tzu dogs, Zuzu and Charlie. They were her everyday treasure and they loved her as fiercely as she loved them. They still do.
Kristin Lynn leaves a big hole in her family that will never be filled. She is survived by her mother and father, Pamela and Charles Slate; her brother, Charles R. Slate, II (Chuck); her sister, Keira Slate Solanki and her husband, Manoj Solanki; her nephew, Joshua Solanki; her aunts, Paula Coughlin, Deborah Barnhart, Cheryl Socks, and Peggy Slate Helene; her uncles, Robert Slate and wife Rebecca; George B. Slate (Bud) and wife Judith; and cousins too numerous to list.
Kristin's ashes will be buried with her beloved grandmother and grandfather, Eleanor and David Barnhart, at Rest Haven Cemetery.
The immediate family invites friends and other family members to join them in celebrating Kristin's life at a memorial gathering at Rest Haven Funeral Home on Friday, October 28, 2016, between the hours of 6-8pm.
