Luella Rice Eckstine, 90, of Hagerstown, Md., passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, August 4, 2017.
Luella was born on July 10, 1927, in Leitersburg, Md., the daughter of the late Ethel and Clifford Rice.
She graduated from Hagerstown High School as valedictorian of her 1946 graduating class.
Luella's career spanned 70 years, and she enjoyed every position she ever held. She worked part-time at 16 for local department store, married William R. Eckstine in 1948 and worked by his side on their dairy farm until 1968; was a proofreader/editor of medical text books for the Harper & Row Publishing Company; executive secretary in the Executive offices of Fairchild Engine and Airplane Corporation; office manager for Ogden Food Service Corporation, and later, Classic Food Services Corporation. After retirement, she worked part-time for 12 years until age 86 as receptionist for the Herald Mail Company.
Luella was very proud of and dedicated to her family, especially her daughter and grandchildren. she instilled in her children and grandchildren a love for education, the importance of working hard and doing one's best, as well as showing kindness, respect and compassion for people and animals.
Luella was an avid Orioles baseball fan her entire life. She was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church, 108 E. Franklin Street, Hagerstown, Md., for over 40 years.
She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Eckstine Macht and husband Harold; three brothers Max Rice (Chickie), Lynn Rice (Delores), and Donald Rice (Mary); grandchildren: David (Jennifer) Macht, and Sarah Macht (Alex) Dergins; one great-grandchild, Matthew Macht. Luella has many nephews/nieces grand nephews/grand nieces.
In addition to her parents she also was preceded in death by by her husband of 42 years, William Richard Eckstine, sister Jane Franek, and brothers Richard Rice and Clifford Rice.
Family will receive friends at Rest Haven Funeral Home, 1601 Pennsylvania Avenue, Hagerstown, Md., on Monday evening August 7, 2017, from 6pm to 8 pm.
A private graveside service will be held on Tuesday, August 8, 2017 at Rest Haven Cemetery. Hospice Chaplain Father Michael Seger will officiate.
