Margaret Elizabeth Midge Smyth

Margaret “Midge” Elizabeth Smyth, 92, of Hagerstown, passed away on Friday, April 8, 2016 at Coffman Nursing Home.

Born December 11, 1923, in Frederick, she was the daughter of the late James Harvey and Clemma (Bidle) May. She was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Randall Brewer Smyth, in November, 1990.

She was a graduate of Frederick High School and Hagerstown Business College. Immediately following graduation from HBC, she was hired as executive secretary to the manager of Hotel Alexander, a position she dearly loved and enjoyed from 1942 to 1952. In 1964 she was named Mothers March Chairman for the Washington County March of Dimes National Foundation.

She was employed by the Board of Education in the first Title 1 program from 1967 thru 1969. From 1976 until her retirement in 1990 she was a dental secretary and office manager. During WWII, she served as an active regular Jr. Volunteer at the YMCA-United Service Organizations (USO) and the Newton D. Baker Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va. She was a longtime member of Northwood Club, American Legion Auxiliary Post 42 and in earlier years the Appalachian Trail Club, Kappa Chapter of Beta Signa Phi and Gradale Sorority.

She is survived by a son, Randall Coleman Smyth (wife Karen) of Oak Ridge, TN.; a daughter, Karen Elizabeth Harr (husband Ernest) of Boonsboro, MD; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three sisters, Betty L. May, Helen Heller (husband Jim), Gladys Wastler (husband Charlie); a brother, Nelson R. May; and a sister-in-law, Mollie May, all of Fredrick.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by a brother, James Elmer May 2006. At her request, inurnment will be private in Rest Haven Cemetery. Arrangements by Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, Hagerstown.
