Melvin Franklin was born on February 10, 1950, to James E. Franklin, Sr. and Rosa J. Franklin in Baltimore, Maryland. They had three other sons, Robert, David, and Jonathan. Melvin was the sixth child of his father's eight children.
He enjoyed family time and activities until his health required him to need specialized care. After which time family visits and outings became more meaningful and special. He enjoyed care rides, listening to baseball games, shooting a basketball on a court with his brothers, and going out for fast food.
In later years, Melvin transitioned to The Human Development Council Residential Services located in Frederick, Maryland. While there, he learned a work skill used at Goodwill Industries. Also, he attended The Human Development Council Day Program where he made many friends with his peers and care givers who cared for him for many years.
