Phyllis E. Rice, 85, of Hagerstown went home to be with her Lord in Heaven while at Doey's House in Hagerstown on August 30, 2024, surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Roy L. Rice on December 15, 2021.Born in Smithsburg, MD, on August 27, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Floyd and Florence Gearhart. She was a 1957 graduate of North Hagerstown High school. She was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church in Chewsville, MD. Known for her generous heart and nurturing spirit, Phyllis was a devoted mother to her two sons and babysat numerous nieces and nephews, providing them with love and support through the years. Phyllis's greatest joy in life came from her love for animals, particularly her dogs and "grand dogs". She found immense comfort and happiness in the companionship of her furry friends. During her time in nursing care, Phyllis was fortunate to receive visits from several dogs, bringing her peace and joy in her final days.Family get-togethers were a cherished tradition for Phyllis, where she delighted loved ones with her famous chocolate chip cookies and peach and apple "pot pies", treats that will be fondly remembered by all who had the pleasure of tasting them. Phyllis leaves behind a legacy of kindness and love that will continue to live on in the hearts of those she touched. She was known for her faith in God and constant prayers for others. She is survived by two sons, Steven B. Rice and wife Kathy of Hagerstown, MD., Kevin L. Rice and wife Leisa of Cascade MD, grandson Tyler Shetter of Montrose, CO. Two sisters, Louella Kline (husband Charles) of Hagerstown MD., and Betty Marquiss ,of Melbourne, FL, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Floyd and Lloyd Gearhart, and two sisters, Rachel Respo and Lorraine Wolford.Visitation will be held at Rest Haven Funeral Home on Friday, September 6, 2024, from 11:00-1:00, with services following at 1 pm.In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Doey's House or the Washington County Humane Society, both of which were a cause close to Phyllis' heart.
