Richard Allen Dick Lightner

Richard Allen "Dick" Lightner, 85, of Maugansville, passed away on Tuesday, May 19, 2015, at his home.

Born April 13, 1930 in Hagerstown, he was the devoted and cherished son of the late Earle "Doc" and Hazel (Uhler) Lightner, and the much-loved dad to Susan Lightner Sagarin and John Lightner.

Dick was a 1948 graduate of Hagerstown High School and the American Institute of Banking in Washington, D.C. He served in the US Navy from 1950-1954, when he was honorably discharged. In 1959, he accepted a position with Suburban Trust, now Bank of America in Montgomery County, where he had a long and distinguished career of 37 years. Dick married the love of his life, Eleanor S. " Elle' " (Seaman) Lightner on April 30,1955. In 1995, Dick and his wife retired to FL and then returned to the Hagerstown area in 2002 where he really felt at home.

Dick was a dedicated member of Trinity United Church of Christ, where he served as a deacon, an elder, and a member of the church choir. He helped to start the ministry, Holly Place, that provided monthly visits and entertainment. In 2010, Dick and his wife began a brown bag ministry to feed the homeless every week. It continues today. He was also a member of the USS Noxubee Shipmates Assoc., and the Morris Frock American Legion Post No. 42. Dick was active in youth affairs in Montgomery Co., where he coached and assisted in Little League, scouting and other interests of his children. He was a lifetime member of the Montgomery County Agricultural Center, a member of the Silver Spring Jaycees, and held various offices. He was a former member of The Order of DeMolay and the U of MD Terrapin Club.

In addition to his wife, Dick is also survived by a daughter, Susan L. Sagarin and her husband Mark, of Montgomery Village, MD; a son, John Richard Lightner (Allison Kent), of San Diego, CA; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. He is also survived by two sisters in law, Mary Ellen Lightner and Nan Seaman Courtney.

In addition to his parents, Dick was also preceded in death by two brothers, Earle H. Lightner, J. William Lightner; and two sisters, Patricia Bennett and Suzanne Shirey.

A celebration of Dick's life will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, June 13, 2015 at Trinity United Church of Christ, 29 East Ave., State Line, with the Rev. Dr. Edwin Higgenbottom officiating. Friends will be received one hour prior to the service. A reception will follow at the church. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
