Richard Leon Helfrich, Sr.

Richard "Dick" Leon Helfrich, Sr., 87, of Hagerstown, passed away, Monday, July 24.

Born February 5, 1936 in Hagerstown. He was the son of the late Roy R. and Catherine (Hollyday) Helfrich.

Richard graduated from Hagerstown High School in 1953.

He was employed with the Washington County Board of Education and retired in 1999 after many years of service.

He was a member of Grace U.M. Church.

Richard was an avid fisherman who loved the outdoors. He always had a small garden in the back yard. Richard enjoyed woodworking and made various pieces of furniture for the home. Richard loved the Ag Expo and always entered vegetables, flowers, and his woodworking. He was Grand Champion and won many other ribbons. His passion was collecting memorabilia of the Hagerstown Fair. He had quite an extensive collection.

Richard is survived by his wife of 60 years, Karen (Shank) Helfrich and one son Richard "Rich" Helfrich, Jr. and wife Rebecca of Hagerstown; one sister, Jean L. Bowen; one niece, Barbara Glaseman of Dundalk, Md.; three nephews, Stan Shank of Maugansville, Steve Shank and Scott Shank of Hagerstown.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 28, 2023 at 11:00 A.M. at Rest Haven Funeral Home, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown with Pastor Dionne Hall officiating.

Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 6-8 P.M. and on Friday at Grace United Methodist Church for fellowship and refreshments following the service and burial.
