Robert “Bob” Eichelberger, 80, of Hagerstown, Maryland, passed away on Friday, February 2, 2024, at Doey’s House in Hagerstown, Maryland, surrounded by his family.
Bob was born on August 24, 1943, in Hagerstown, MD and was the son of the late Sadie E. (Huntington) Eichelberger and Ralph D. Eichelberger Sr.
Bob, a lifetime native of Hagerstown, enjoyed a successful 20-year career at Mack Trucks before his entrepreneurial spirit drove him to retire early to pursue several retail business ownerships in Hagerstown. Bob, and the love of his life Anita, managed these businesses until their full retirement in 2004.
Bob loved Williamsburg era architecture, antiques, and he possessed an amazing eye for period furniture, quality, and detail. He also was an avid, gifted landscaper where he enjoyed his trees, shrubs, lawn, flowers, and decorations, all of which transformed their house into a warm, loving, safe, and relaxing home.
Bob was a very private, warm-hearted, and quiet man. He will be remembered as the epitome of the consummate gentleman; always two steps ahead to ensure that everyone was comfortable, happy, and having fun. He was avid cheerleader at his grandchildren’s sporting events…he was their biggest fan. He cared deeply and was a strong advocate for his children’s education and he always made sure that they were positively encouraged and strived to do their very best.
He loved spending time with his loving wife, children and grandchildren and he was always there to help with the voluminous variety of projects everyone had over the years. He was the first one to pitch in and help, without ever having to be asked, and the last one to leave to ensure everything was completed. He will be deeply missed.
Bob is survived by his loving wife and teenage sweetheart, Anita (Summers) Eichelberger, whom he enjoyed a marriage spanning 59 years; two daughters, Michele Eichelberger McGeehan, and Bobbi Hilker; son-in laws Ken Hilker, Jr., and John McGeehan; and five grandchildren; Clay McGeehan, Madison McGeehan, Morgan (Hilker) Carbaugh and husband Nolan, Andrew Hilker and Jack Hilker.
Bob has two surviving brothers: William H. “Bill” Eichelberger and Terry Eichelberger, and sister-in-law Sherry Eichelberger, all current residents of Hagerstown.
Bob was proceeded in death by three brothers and three sisters: Ralph “R.D.” Eichelberger Jr., Don B. Eichelberger and Jack Eichelberger, and sisters; Rosalie Carol (Eichelberger) Nakopoulos, Elaine (Eichelberger) Shatzer, and infant sister, Juanita Eichelberger.
A Celebration of Life to honor Bob will be kept to his wishes, a private gathering with his immediate family will be held February 10, 2024.
