Robert "Bob" Ernest Thiess, 88, of Hagerstown, passed away on Sunday, March 17, 2019 at the University Of Maryland Medical Center, in Baltimore.
Born May 1, 1930, in Schenectady, New York, he was the son of the late Ludwig Ernest and Elisabeth (Knopf) Thiess.
Bob was a graduate of Albany College of Pharmacy of New York.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, where he taught medical and pharmacy students.
Bob was the oldest actively working pharmacist in the tri-state area; being a pharmacist for almost 65 years! He worked for Schindel's Pharmacy, here in Hagerstown for the last 20 years. He also had a passion for photography and keeping his flower beds looking beautiful.
Bob was a member of Zion United Church of Christ; American Legion Post No. 42; North American Rod and Gun Club; and the Hagerstown Lions Club, where he also served as the editor of the newsletter for many years.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his loving wife, Ruth Ann (Hoffman) Thiess; and a son-in-law, Joseph Shobe.
Bob is survived by his two daughters, Elisabeth A. "Lisa" Shobe, Roberta A. Gilligan and her husband Henry; two granddaughters, Rachel E. Gilligan, Tamara M. Formsma and her husband Curtis; cousins, Brigitta Richter and Gertrude Thiess and a host of friends.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, March 23, 2019 at Rest Haven Funeral Home, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery with military honors.
The family will receive friends from 6-8pm on Friday and again an hour before the service at the funeral home.
