Hagerstown, MD – Robert B. Hovermale (Bob), 90, of Hagerstown, MD passed on to the next life peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loving wife and family on November 5, 2023.
He was born on February 27, 1933, in Berkeley Springs, WV to the late James Belmont Hovermale and Betsie (Tevalt) Hovermale.
He was a graduate of Hagerstown High School in 1951.
He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Patricia Ann (Schlotterbeck); two sons Douglas Brenton (Doug), wife Janelle & Robert Blake (Rob), wife Suzy; four grandchildren Kelsey Janelle, Scott Brenton, Bailey Elise, Bethany Nicole, and 2 great grandchildren, Josey Janelle, Kenley Beck, and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers Hugh Nobel (infant), James Dayton (wife Lenora), and Sisters Vivian Conklin (husband Carl), Helen Noland (husband Adrian), Betty Caldwell (husband Doyle), Phyllis Procci (husband Anthony), Marie Larsen (husband Jack)
Bob joined the United States Air Force, after high school, a branch which he greatly enjoyed, due to his passion for aircraft, flying and the military. He had many stories relative to his service in the Air Force, which he always loved to talk about to anyone he could.
One of his most favorite stories or memories was where he served on the main bomber flight crew on Enewetak Island, in scheduled preparation for the first and only Hydrogen bomb deployed on a small island in the south pacific.
After his service in the Air Force, he started employment at Fairchild and then onto an engineering position with Jamison Door Company, where he was known as “the go to guy” for customer product problems and solutions. He stayed with Jamison Door for 38 years, where he retired from in 1994.
He was a member of the local Elks Club in Hagerstown, MD, where he enjoyed many 30- year parties and dinners with past employees of Jamison Door. Bob was a lifetime member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Hagerstown, Maryland.
His hobbies included flying single engine planes out of the Hagerstown Regional airport, to various locations for enjoyment, from which he had certified flight school training and carried a private pilot’s license. He also enjoyed assisting the local FAA mechanic at the airport for routine maintenance and certifications. He loved to hunt and fish whenever he could, and enjoyed being outdoors at his home, with whatever needed to be maintained or fixed.
The family will receive friends at the Rest Haven Funeral Home, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave.; Hagerstown, MD on Thursday November 9, 2023, from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm. The funeral home will be open after 12:00 pm on Thursday for the convenience of family and friends. Funeral services will be held at Rest Haven Funeral Home, Friday November 10, 2023, at 1:00 with Pastor Brian McClinton officiating. Interment will follow the service after.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in the name of Robert Hovermale (Bob) to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 601 Washington Ave, Hagerstown, MD 21740
