Robert Richard Lund Sr., 85, of Hagerstown, passed away on Thursday, April 7, 2011, at his home.
Born July 19, 1925, in West Point, Neb., he was the son of the late Ralph and Viola (Geister) Lund.
Robert was a 1942 graduate of Creighton High School in Nebraska. After graduation he taught kindergarten through eighth grade in a one-room school until being drafted during World War II.
He served in the U.S. Army for 23 years, reaching the rank of sergeant first class. He then went on to retire from the Maryland Correctional Institution in Hagerstown in 1987.
Robert was preceded in death by his loving wife, Didia Marie (Allegretti) Lund, who passed away on April 2, 2009.
He is survived by a daughter, Linda Lund Gaver; a son, Robert Richard Lund Jr. and wife, Nancy Marie, of Hagerstown; two granddaughters, Cara Didia Gaver of New York and Siena Marie Lund of Hagerstown; two grandsons, Robert Gaver and Alexander Michaux Lund, both of Hagerstown; a sister, Jean Hoffart of Nebraska; and four nieces and nephews, Kathy, Glenda, Ricky, and Raymond Jr.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, Raymond Lund, who was shot down during World War II while serving as a B-17 bomber pilot.
A graveside service will be conducted Tuesday, April 12, 2011, at 10 a.m. in Rest Haven Cemetery, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with the Rev. David Kaplan officiating. Interment will follow with military honors being accorded by the Maryland State Honor Guard.
