Ruth Marie (Lambert) Neal, 90, of Hagerstown, passed away on Monday, February 23, 2015 at the home of her daughter in Fairview, NC.
Born October 17, 1924, in Forge Ridge, TN., she was the daughter of the late James and Mary (Cosby) Lambert.
Ruth was a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church, where she was also involved in the Woman's Society, the Wesleyan Sunday School Class, and the Primetimers social group. She was also a member of the Funkstown Homemakers Club. Ruth enjoyed various activities such as playing cards, needlework and various crafts. She worked tirelessly as a volunteer for her church and was also an advocate for the mentally retarded. She volunteered for The ARC of Washington County, Goodwill Industries, the American Lung Association, and later on became a volunteer for Hospice.
During WWII, Ruth was a " Rosie the Riveter", working in the defense plants in Baltimore, MD. She worked on and off as a nurse aid and was briefly employed by a Welcome Wagon competitor called Greeters, Inc. After the war, she and her late husband Henry, moved to Hagerstown. He worked and retired from Fairchild Industries. They lived on Medway Rd. in Hagerstown, since the late 1940's. In retirement, she and Henry became 'snow birds' to Mesa, AZ for over 20 years.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her loving husband of 67 years, Henry B. Neal, who died in Aug., 2009; a son, Ken Neal; one sister; and three brothers.
Ruth is survived by her daughter, Deborah Neal Sayles and husband Jerry of Fairview, NC; a son, Robert Neal of Hagerstown; a granddaughter, Hannah Sayles of Greensboro, NC; a brother, H. Earl Lambert and wife Louise of Bristol, TN.; a sister-in-law, Alice Neal of Waynesboro, PA; and several nieces and nephews in TN., KY., and TX.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2:30pm on Saturday, April 4, 2015 at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with Pastor Patrick Ricker officiating. The family will receive friends following her Celebration of Life service.
