Shirley Ann Ryland

Beloved wife and mother Shirley Ann Ryland, 88, passed away on Monday, September 26th, 2022.  Shirley was born in Hagerstown on August 5, 1934 to her parents Reverend Frank Mentzer and Mary Mentzer. She is survived by her loving husband, Ralph Benjamin Ryland, Sr. Shirley and “Benny” were married in her childhood home by her father on September 28, 1952. They recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

Shirley also leaves behind her son, Ralph Benjamin Ryland, Jr., and daughters Karen Wurster (Mark) and Sherry Kibler (Keith). She was affectionately known as “Nanny” to her four grandchildren- Christopher Wurster (Heather), Matthew Kibler (Bryn), Kelly-Jo Thompson (David), and Amanda Reahl (Rob), and eight greatgrandchildren- Charlie, Cooper, Milo, Camden, Blair, Samuel, Jack, and Penelope. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Barbara Oster(Charles), as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Nanny loved to be outside working in her garden or watching the birds. That was where we always expected to find her when we visited. Her love of nature was contagious.

Our family has been touched by the outpouring of love we have received from Hospice of Washington County and Doey’s House, 1710 Underpass Way, Ste 300 Hagerstown, MD 21740. Any donations you feel led to make to these organizations in Shirley’s honor are welcome and appreciated.

The family will receive visitors on Saturday, October 1st at 10:00 AM, followed by a funeral service at 12:00 PM, at Ringgold Church in Hagerstown, Maryland. She will be laid to rest at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania.
