Stephen Szuszekos Hartwick, 87, of Hagerstown,Md., passed away, Saturday, March 4, 2023, at his home.
Born on June 5, 1935, in Budapest, Hungary he was the son of the late, Joseph and Catherine Szuszekos.
Educated in Hungarian schools and obtained his certification in machine operations.
He joined the Hungarian Army, rose to the rank of Sergeant, and participated in the Hungarian uprising during the 1956 Hungarian revolt against the strong-arm forces of the communist regime. Steve fled Hungary and arrived in Salzburg Austria at which time he flew to the United States arriving in Pittsburgh, Pa where he met Marion Heisch, his wife of 65 years. Steve has two sons, David and Gary, a grandson Gary Stephen and two great grandchildren, Alexia and Jamison. He has four brothers and sisters, Katy, Julie, John and Charles, a sister-in-law, Joanne Livingston and a brother-in-law, John M. Heisch.
Steve was a great tennis enthusiast and played tennis with his friends around the area.
Steve traveled back to his homeland many times with his wife Marion. The Grand Canyon and South Sea Islands were also on his favorite list for sun and adventure.
Stephen will be greatly missed by his family and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Sunday, April 23, 2023, at 11:00 A.M. at Rest Haven Funeral Home with Pastor James Gross officiating. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
Friends will be received at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
